APP Scams

If you are victim of an APP scam payment, under UK regulation, you may be entitled to claim reimbursement.

APP (Authorised Push Payment) scams happen when a scammer tricks someone into sending a payment via bank transfer, to an account outside of their control. It is different from unauthorised fraud, which is when someone steals your card to make a payment, for example.

Payment Systems Regulator (PSR):

The PSR introduced new APP fraud reimbursement protections on 7 October 2024, which apply to UK bank transfers (made over the Faster Payments system or CHAPS) on or after this date.

Who can claim for APP Fraud Reimbursement:

  • Private individuals
  • Microenterprises
  • Eligible Charities (whose annual income is below £1m)

APP Claims Reimbursement process:

To be reviewed for reimbursement, Claims must have:

  • been reported to us within 13 months of the last APP scam payment.
  • been authorised by victim and made by bank transfer via the UK Faster Payments System or CHAPS.
  • been made to & from a UK bank account belonging to an individual, microenterprise or eligible charity.
  • been sent to a UK account that is not one of your own accounts.
  • been made on, or after, 7th October 2024.

Please provide as much detail as possible regarding your claim and email to [email protected] where the fraud investigation team will review and respond with any additional queries if required.

We aim to provide you with an outcome to your claim as quickly as possible, and no later than 35 business days.

The maximum claim amount is up to £85,000.

If your claim is successful, we may apply an excess of up to £100 – decided on a case-by-case basis. If we do apply the excess, we’ll deduct it from the amount we reimburse you (for example, if you are scammed out of £1000, a £100 excess would mean that you’d receive £900 back if your claim is successful.
